Who are Saptha Rishis

The Sapta Rishis, also known as the Seven Sages, are revered sages in Hindu mythology. They are considered the mind-born sons of Brahma, the creator deity, and are credited with authoring hymns and contributing to the Vedic scriptures. Here is the list of the Sapta Rishis:

Origin

1. Kashyapa:

   • Origin: Kashyapa is one of the oldest and most revered sages in Hindu mythology. He is said to be the son of Marichi, one of the mind-born sons of Brahma, the creator deity.
   • Life Story: Kashyapa is known for his deep knowledge of scriptures and his mastery of yoga and meditation. He is regarded as the father of many divine beings, including gods, demons, and legendary creatures like the Nagas (serpents).

2. Atri:

   • Origin: Atri is believed to be the son of Brahma. He is known for his unwavering devotion to the supreme divine and his ascetic practices.
   • Life Story: Atri is revered for his penance and tapas (austerities), which earned him the favor of the gods. He is the father of Dattatreya, a divine incarnation of the Hindu trinity, and the husband of Anasuya, a paragon of chastity and virtue.

3. Vashista:

   • Origin: Vashista is considered one of the mind-born sons of Brahma. He is regarded as one of the primary authors of the Rigveda, one of the oldest texts in Hinduism.
   • Life Story: Vashista is revered as a great sage and spiritual teacher. He is known for his wisdom, righteousness, and impartiality. Vashista is often depicted as the family priest of the Solar Dynasty (Suryavansha) and as a mentor to Lord Rama in the Ramayana.

4. Vishwamitra:

   • Origin: Vishwamitra was originally a king named Kaushika. Through his penance and tapas, he earned the status of a sage and became one of the Sapta Rishis.
   • Life Story: Vishwamitra is known for his determination and perseverance in his quest for spiritual knowledge. He is often depicted as a fierce ascetic and a powerful sage who overcame numerous challenges to attain his goals. Vishwamitra’s rivalry with Vashista is a prominent theme in Hindu mythology.

5. Gautama:

   • Origin: Gautama is believed to be the son of Brahma or one of his descendants. He is known for his adherence to dharma (righteousness) and his dedication to spiritual practices.
   • Life Story: Gautama is revered as a sage of great wisdom and piety. He is best known for his role in the story of Ahalya, where he cursed his wife to become a stone due to her infidelity. Gautama’s compassion and forgiveness later led to Ahalya’s redemption.

6. Jamadagni:

   • Origin: Jamadagni is said to be the son of Rishi Bhrigu, another prominent sage in Hindu mythology. He is revered for his asceticism and his devotion to Lord Shiva.
   • Life Story: Jamadagni is best known as the father of Parashurama, the sixth avatar of Vishnu. He is also known for his role in the story of Renuka, his wife, whom he ordered his son Parashurama to kill due to her momentary lapse in chastity.

7. Bharadvaja:

   • Origin: Bharadvaja is believed to be the son of Brihaspati, the guru of the Devas (celestial beings). He is revered for his knowledge of the Vedas and his contributions to Vedic literature.
   • Life Story: Bharadvaja is known for his wisdom and his role as a teacher to many famous sages and kings. He is often depicted as a humble and devoted disciple of his guru Brihaspati, embodying the virtues of humility and devotion.
